I finally got my scanner out of the closet and set up (reason #2 this blog was a fabulous idea, Eric!) so I can catch up with the posting...2 days in and I'm already slacking. In honor of my slackerness, I decided to sketch a genuine Slacker Dude. He comes complete with his I-Phone (this is in no way a slight to people with I-Phones - I wish I was that cool). Like many costume designers, I love to draw women (Pretty Dresses and all!) and find men a little boring to draw. I hereby resolve to draw more men - even Slacker Dudes.

Eric Sketch #2: Jan 5

Tonight my middle school drama troupe read Suzan Zeder's Wiley and the Hairy Man. What I love about this history of this play is that it was one of the first major TYA plays to feature a child protagonist. After all, we're used to a story tradition of things happening to children, but we have little in our heritage to show us children making and enacting strong decisions. I mean, did Cinderella actually DO anything? So, I decided to do a sketch of the Hairy Man himself. He's a backwoods conjurer, with yellow teeth, huge feet with fourteen toes, a bone through his nose, and an overall mean disposition.

When Eric, man of many wonderful ideas, asked me to contribute to his blog and make a sketch every day (well, almost every day) I was sitting at home in my Snuggie, watching the train wreck that is Jersey Shore online. I took one look at "Snookie" and thought to myself, "You, my fine Guidette, shall be my Muse!" and knew she would look simply lovely in a Snuggie of her very own. She is way classier that me, as you can see, because her Snuggie is made of real leopard skin...with a side of Wild Turkey. This, I think, may be the beginning of my Jersey Shore Series...I'm looking at you JWOWW...

I made a pact with Eric to do a Sketch a Day as well, on weekdays and not on travel days when I'm leaving town. I did a lot of sketches today-for La Boheme. What I am finding difficult is making the artists look "poor" while just in their drawing phase. Here is Rodolfo, as not yet seen by the director.

Eric Sketch #1: Jan 4

I have no idea why I wanted to do a stupid fish man, but after staring at the paper for almost 45 minutes, I had to draw something. He's like a weird 1970's magician fish person. You're welcome.

Starting This Off...

So, I made it my New Year's resolution to further my drawing by practicing more often. I really love drawing, but I'm quite lazy about making myself do it, now that grad school is a piece of paper hanging on my studio wall. In sharing this idea with Jen Caprio, we decided to take the challenge together, just to make ourselves more accountable.

Now that's what this blog is going to be about. Each weekday, we're going to do a sketch and post it. So far, we haven't established any rules, but generally speaking, it should be more than a doodle on a napkin. If we are doing drawing in conjunction with work, that counts.

We're also recruiting more friends who might be willing to join us. After all, more ideas are better than fewer, and I have many, many, MANY talented friends. Just leave a comment here if you too would like to make the commitment.

Even though I'm personally notorious for starting things and not finishing them, I do hope that I can make this one stick. Here's to 2010: a creative and productive year for all!
